Gluehwein

German Mulled Wine

Another holiday drink to have in cold weather.

Ingredients

3/4 cup water
3/4 cup white sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange
10 whole cloves
1 (750 milliliter) bottlered wine

Directions

  1. In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer.
  2. Cut the orange in half, and squeeze the juice into the simmering water. Push the cloves into the outside of the orange peel, and place peel in the simmering water. Continue simmering for 30 minutes, until thick and syrupy.
  3. Pour in the wine, and heat until steaming but not simmering. Remove the clove-studded orange halves. Serve hot in mugs or glasses that have been preheated in warm water (cold glasses will break.)

Red Hot Chocolate

This drink looks so pretty in the picture, I had to post the recipe though part of the instructions are quite specific.

1 ounce Campari
2 ounces Brandy
3 ounce whole milk
1/2 ounce heavy cream (optional)
2 tablespoons of dark chocolate chips

Put milk, cream and chocolate in a milk frothing cup used for espresso.  Froth milk as you would for cappuccino. When milk is hot remove frothing wand or whisk and stir vigorously until chocolate is completely melted. Add Campari and Brandy.  Pour into a heat-resistant cup. Garnish with a large marshmallow or a red peppermint stick.
